👨 Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) Calculator
Divide your waist size by your hip size to check for belly fat and heart risk.
📈 WHR Chart (World Health Organization, WHO)
| Sex | Normal | At risk of belly fat | Abdominal obesity |
|---|---|---|---|
| 👨 Men | Below 0.90 | 0.90 to 0.99 | 1.00 and above |
| 👩 Women | Below 0.80 | 0.80 to 0.84 | 0.85 and above |
💡 How to measure: Use a tape measure. Measure your waist at the narrowest part above your belly button, and your hips at the widest part of your bottom. Breathe out gently and relax before you measure.
☝ Why WHR Matters
- Belly fat = visceral fat — The higher your WHR, the more fat there is around your internal organs, and the higher the risk of metabolic diseases.
- Heart and blood vessel disease — Belly fat is a risk factor on its own for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and coronary artery disease.
- Diabetes — Visceral fat makes the body resist insulin, which raises the risk of type 2 diabetes.
- How it differs from BMI — Even with a normal BMI, a high WHR can mean you carry too much belly fat, so check both.
- For older adults — As we age, muscle tends to shrink and belly fat tends to grow, so it is important to measure regularly.
